Marble crystallization is a chemical and mechanical process that hardens and polishes the surface of marble floors. A crystallizer chemical (powder or liquid) is applied to the marble and then buffed using a low-speed crystallization machine fitted with steel wool or a polishing pad. The chemical reacts with the calcium carbonate in the marble, creating a glassy, durable surface layer that is scratch-resistant and produces a deep mirror-like gloss.

In Malaysia's high-traffic commercial environments such as hotel lobbies, shopping malls, and office buildings, marble floors should be crystallized every 3 to 6 months. For residential marble floors with lighter foot traffic, once every 6 to 12 months is typically sufficient. Regular crystallization maintains the gloss level and extends the life of the marble surface significantly.

Diamond polishing uses diamond-impregnated pads to mechanically grind and polish the stone surface, removing scratches, stains, and lippage. It is used for restoration of badly damaged marble. Crystallization, on the other hand, is a maintenance process that uses chemical reaction and heat from a polishing machine to create a glossy hardened surface. For best results, diamond polishing is done first to restore the stone, followed by crystallization for protection and shine.

Crystallization works best on calcium-based stones such as marble, travertine, and limestone. Granite, being silica-based, does not respond to traditional crystallization chemicals. However, granite floors can be polished to a high gloss using diamond polishing pads. Terrazzo floors (which contain marble chips) respond well to crystallization and can achieve an excellent shine.
